Tainan canal 100
“Tainan canal 100” Creates a Nighttime Waterside Art Experience and Invites the Public to Imagine the Future Together
Since its opening in 1926, the Tainan Canal has carried a century of the city’s history and development. Marking the 100th anniversary of the canal this year, the Tainan City Government Public Works Bureau has launched the “Tainan canal 100” lighting environment demonstration project, aiming to reinterpret the canal through artistic intervention and spatial transformation.
Located along the southern bank of the northern section of the canal at Anping Canal Park (from Wangyue Bridge to Chengtian Bridge), the project introduces lighting environment design and public space improvements, transforming the waterfront landscape into a nighttime artistic venue for viewing and gathering. The exhibition runs from now until June 30, daily from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, inviting visitors to rediscover the rhythm of the city through light and water.
Three light-environment art installations have been created within the site, symbolizing the canal’s past, present, and future.
“A Century of Flowing Light” interprets visions of the city’s future through dynamic light trails.
“Canal Weave of Light” uses interwoven illumination to represent cycles and connections.
“The Light Holding Peace” recalls memories of the canal through bamboo-woven boats and warm lighting.
Together, these three installations shape an immersive nighttime waterfront experience, outlining a new vision for the future of the Tainan Canal.

Since its opening, the Tainan Canal has borne witness to the city’s cycles of prosperity and transformation, recording over a century of changes in hydrology, settlements, and industry. It has served not only as the lifeline of the old capital but also as a vessel of collective memory, carrying the weight of history and the flow of culture.
This work takes trajectories of light as its core visual language, symbolizing the flowing river and the shifting passage of time. Composed of multiple light-track units, the installation echoes ripples of water in the night—overlapping, refracting, and responding to one another—forming streams of luminous pathways. As visitors move through the space, the light shifts with each step, inviting them to step into a cross-section of the canal’s hundred-year journey.
These trajectories resemble the wake of passing boats, as well as the traces left by time itself. Through layered light and rhythmic motion, the work transforms this historic waterway into an experience that can be felt in the present. The flowing light pays tribute to the past while also symbolizing the city’s continual movement toward the future.
The work weaves an infinite loop of light across the Anping Canal, symbolizing the passage of time, the accumulation of memory, and the continuity of life. Each luminous ring suggests a new beginning, releasing energy from within and expanding outward, while the shimmering water reflections projected at its core embody the city’s vital life force. On the grassy slope, dozens of mirrored stainless-steel hemispheres form the landscape of “River and Sea in Light”: by day, they reflect the rippling canal and surrounding scenery, immersing viewers in a tidal seascape; by night, flowing light emerges from within, creating a dynamic and poetic atmosphere.
Since its completion in 1926, the Anping Canal has transformed from an “economic river” for transporting rice and salt into a “cultural river.” After a period of quiet decline, it has been revitalized through restoration and the regeneration of its lighting environment, reborn as a waterfront stage that carries dreams. Canal Weave of Light guides viewers through currents of light and memory, inviting them to look back on the past, experience the present, and weave visions of the future within an endless cycle. Through the dialogue between water and light, the work aspires for this century-old river to continue gathering creativity and connection, blossoming with renewed cultural energy.
《The Light Holding Peace》 floats upon the Anping Canal, where a crafted bamboo boat evokes memories of the water villages of the past. Beneath the vessel, underwater lights radiate outward, their reflections spreading across the night like blessings unfolding on the river’s surface—symbols of harmony, enduring unity, and lasting peace.
Continuing the historical context of the Five Harbors, the work reflects Anping’s long-standing role as a place where commerce, travelers, and human connections converge. Light and boat exist in mutual resonance: it is both “The Light Holding Peace” and “Anping that gathers light.” Through this interplay, stories of the harbor and shared cultural emotions are transformed into a flowing poetic artwork, drifting gently across the water.
《Hello, Tainan! 》takes the Anping Canal as its stage, featuring a large speech bubble installed on a boat, as if passengers are engaging in conversation with people along the shore. These symbolic dialogues allow viewers to sense the city’s warmth and human touch, expressing Tainan’s open spirit and cultural charm as a historic port city.
Through humor and interaction, the work invites people to reconsider the warmth and sense of connection embedded in the everyday greeting “Hello.”
