2026 Yuejin Lantern Festival |Cloudscape

Cloudscape — Storing the Imagination of Yanshuei’s Future

Yuejin Harbor is a floating data port — a tangible cloud space.

The 2026 Yuejin Lantern Festival takes “Cloudscape” as its theme, viewing the entire river as an open realm suspended between time, space, and flowing data. Through the participation of both artists and visitors, the festival unfolds an “uploading of imagination” and a “downloading of sensory experience.” Here, the “cloud” is not merely a technological term but a perceptual interface shaped by light, mist, and art installations. Artists transform their reflections on Yanshuei’s culture, history, and natural landscape into luminous works dispersed across this old town where the virtual and the physical intertwine. As nightfall meets drifting mist, each artwork emerges as a signal-like lightscape, allowing Yanshuei’s future to be regenerated in the present moment. Wandering through the space, visitors “download” their own sensory encounters, carrying with them a future imagined together with Yanshuei.

Floating Light, Drifting Clouds

Creator|Urban Art Studio

Design concept|

This work uses flowing light as a symbol of the renewed convergence of Yanshuei’s spiritual beliefs and cultural energy. Hundreds of lanterns form a luminous body floating upon the river, flickering with the night breeze and linking the waterway like drifting clouds and mist. As visitors pass through, they seem to enter a cloud node woven from data and memory. Light reflects and interlaces upon the water, forming a river of light where tradition and the future meet. Through light as its language, the work invites people to rediscover and reconnect with Yanshuei’s collective memory.

Created by the curatorial team Urban Art Studio, this work has become a landmark within the Yuejin Lantern Festival site through years of planning and execution. While continuing the familiar lantern form, this year’s enlarged scale further deepens its visual impact and lasting impression.

The Traveller – A Body in Transition

Creator|Abe Nyubo (Japan)

Design concept|

"Truth, when put on its dress, finds the facts too tight. In imagination she moves at ease."

— Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds

The traveller floating on the water appears as if he has just descended from another world. Light illuminates his body, while his reflection forms a second self upon the surface, where reality and illusion overlap. As viewers circle around him, they sense that he is still moving forward — through air, through clouds, and beyond the boundaries of the reality we know. Using the body as an interface of perception, the work explores the fluid overlapping of the digital and the real, responding to the Cloudscape theme by asking: between virtual and reality, where does our body truly belong?

Abe Nyubo, born in Niigata, Japan, graduated from the Sculpture Department of Kanazawa College of Art and later from the Graduate Institute of Sculpture at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Now based in Taiwan, he is deeply interested in the expansion of the body and its symbolic meanings, exploring themes such as the “extended body” and “possible worlds” within digital space and contemporary society.

Celestial Pegasus

Creator|Koji Morioka & Kyoto University of the Arts

Design concept|

A mythical beast from the clouds rests quietly upon the water. Its translucent washi body emits a gentle glow, as if a dream were slowly taking shape in the night. The single horn symbolizes the fusion of ideals and technology, while its wings spread like layers of cloud, mirrored upon the river’s surface to form two parallel realms. Gazing upward through light and shadow, viewers seem to witness belief transformed into a symbol of the future. Celestial Pegasus turns traditional mythology into contemporary imaginative energy, revealing a luminous creature co-created by faith and creativity within Cloudscape.

Born in Kyoto, Japan, Koji Morioka leads students from Kyoto University of the Arts in the creation of works using translucent Japanese washi paper. His sculptures blend traditional Japanese elements, natural themes, and contemporary cultural thought. He currently teaches at Kyoto University of the Arts.

Phang-á-pàu of Light

Creator|Peppercorns Interactive Media Art

Design concept|

Lasers and sound intersect in the air, bursting with the intensity of firecrackers and scattering into countless fragments of memory. Standing within these walls of light, visitors feel the vibration of sound waves as mist flows and beams refract, each flicker leaving an afterimage suspended in time.

This work reinterprets the traditional "Phang-á-pàu" (Yanshuei Beehive Fireworks), a chaotic yet sacred Taiwanese ritual used to ward off evil. It transforms that explosive energy into resonant data within the cloud, creating a perceivable digital ritual. By translating this folk celebration into a contemporary "node of light," the work immerses audiences in an experience where local belief continues to burn through technology.

About the Team Peppercorns Interactive Media Art is a prominent Taiwanese new media art collective, recognized for its immersive interactive experiences and distinctive visual storytelling. In 2025, the team has been invited to exhibit at major technology art festivals in Prague and Romania, bringing Taiwan’s creative energy to the international stage.

A05 流域No.6:河 Flux No.6: River

Creator|Chiehsen Chiu & Margot Guillemot

Design concept|

A luminous structure extending along the riverbank, resembling drifting clouds or flowing air currents, floats upon the water and moves with the breeze. As light shimmers on the surface, reality and reflection overlap, forming a boundary between nature and data. Gazing from the shore, viewers perceive energy flowing through the river, as light becomes a trajectory of information, transforming nature’s breath into a rhythm of data. Using light as its medium, the work reveals the interwoven relationship between technology and nature, embodying the Cloudscape theme upon the waters of Yanshuei.

Artist and independent curator Chiehsen Chiu is also an assistant professor at the Department of Art and Design, Yuan Ze University, focusing on cultural geography and cartographic studies in his work. Margot Guillemot, a French artist born in Cork, Ireland, is currently pursuing a PhD in Contemporary Visual Culture at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Their works often explore the contradictions between reality and virtuality, space and time in contemporary urban life.

Flowing Pathways

Creator|No Side Here

Design concept|

Lines of light stretch along the riverbank like the drifting traces of memory, glowing softly in the darkness. Inspired by Yanshuei’s traditional pigeon whistle culture, the work translates the former hum of the sky into a language of light upon the water. When visitors lift the interactive bamboo basket, pathways of light are generated in real-time, like live data computation. Light and sound extend, diverge, and return along the river, symbolizing the exchange of perception between humans and their environment. Each interaction becomes a moment of immediate feedback, as if the pigeons travel at the speed of light between past and future.

The art collective No Side Here (Lin Jun Huang, Huang Chi Hung, and Cheng Tzu Yun) focuses on sound-and-light installations and interactive sensory experiences, exploring how overlooked signals in everyday life connect with environment and culture, encouraging dialogue and resonance through artistic practice.

The Descent of the Inari Nine-Tailed White Fox

Creator|Hsia Ai Hua

Design concept|

A white fox stands quietly amid mist and light, its nine tails spreading like wings and emitting a gentle glow. Both a guardian and an embodiment of energy, it descends from the clouds into the human world, watching over the shimmering Yuejin Harbor. Shaped with inflatable structures, its luminous body evokes a coexistence of spirituality and technology. As visitors approach, the light fluctuates with the airflow, as if breathing in dialogue with humanity. Using mythology as its medium, the work transforms belief into a spiritual energy field for the cloud era, creating an illusion reminiscent of a Japanese shrine against the backdrop of nearby temples.

Artist and curator Hsia Ai Hua graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the National Taiwan University of Arts and earned a master’s degree in Environmental Design from Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. She has participated in numerous Taiwan–Japan exchange exhibitions and has received grants from the National Culture and Arts Foundation and the Taipei City Government.

Cloudfall

Creator|Wang Zhen-Wei

 Design concept|

A cascade of colorful light pours down from the bridge, forming a floating waterfall that connects the bridge and the water. By day it reflects sunlight, and by night it transforms into a flowing river of data, its colors shifting like electrical currents. The work reassembles everyday materials to reinterpret the dynamics of nature, allowing the “waterfall” to become an interface between technology and environment. As visitors cross the bridge, light flows beneath their feet, as if traversing the threshold between reality and the cloud. Time, memory, and information converge within water and light, revealing an ever-renewing stream of data.

Specializing in large-scale installations, Wang Zhen-Wei explores the relationship between humanity and the environment through innovative use of everyday materials such as metal, wood, fabric, and rope. His works often encourage interaction, creating poetic yet thought-provoking experiences. He currently teaches as an adjunct lecturer at National Changhua University of Education.

An Electronic #46 – Misty Lightscape

VISION BASE

Creator| Yao Chung Han + VISION BASE

Design concept|

Centering on mist and light, this work transforms natural phenomena into a theatre of digital perception. As mist spreads across the water, light pierces through to form layered luminous fields, creating constantly shifting imagery. The sound samples derive from the Yanshuei firecracker ritual, converted into electronic rhythms that vibrate through the air. Walking along the shoreline within the fog and light feels like entering a breathable data cloud. Continuing the artist’s exploration of “audiovisual co-constructed perception,” this work turns traditional energy rituals into a contemporary “ritual of light” for the cloud era.

Yao Chung Han has received recognition such as the Taipei Art Awards (2017) and specializes in outdoor installations combining sound, light, and spatial experimentation. He is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at Shih Chien University. VISION BASE is an innovative practice hub at Shih Chien University’s College of Design, dedicated to forward-thinking, practical, and experimental approaches to future design, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and research-driven innovation.

Ribbon bridge

Creator|Chen Wan Yi & Wu Kuan Wei

Design concept|

Through the flow of light, the work opens an entrance to a passageway. A four-strand spiral corridor of light stretches across the river, appearing from the side like a bridge connecting two shores. Viewers traverse it visually, as if stepping into a fissure in time and space. Light and mist weave through the structure, while the spatial perception twists and shifts with changing perspectives. Semi-translucent canvas is used to create a sense of permeability, evoking the feeling of being within a passage between different dimensions. By overlaying past and future, and translating this layered state through parametric form design, the work simulates an exploration of spacetime, and memory.

Chen Wan Yi, with a background in craft and industrial design, has received awards such as the Young Pin Design Award in the craft category and first prize in the Innovation Group of the TNH Creative Festival. Wu Kuan Wei, specializing in spatial and landscape design, was shortlisted for the Potential New Talent category of the 2025 TNH Creative Festival.

The Everlasting Motion

Creator|UxU Studio

Design concept|

Within flowing light, time moves slowly onward. Curved metal structures and LED strips form a moment that appears frozen yet subtly changes through delicate flickers. The moon’s reflection upon the water outlines the silhouette of a child and a mutual gaze, symbolizing the unspoken future and echoes of memory. Standing within this interplay of light and shadow, viewers realize that “eternity” is composed of countless fleeting moments. This serene yet powerful installation invites contemplation of existence and how light leaves traces within time’s continuous flow.

UxU Studio, founded in 2013 by Chen Kuan Hung and Chen Ying Chu, actively participates in domestic and international light festivals. It became the first team from the Chinese-speaking world to exhibit at the Amsterdam Light Festival in 2017 and has since been invited to festivals across Europe and the Middle East, bringing Taiwan’s light art onto the global stage.

Draw A River – Yuejin

Design concept|

A crescent moon and clouds, woven from bamboo and mist, gently descend upon the water. As people walk across the bridge, mist with soft light rises around their feet and fills the air. The arc of moonlight and the tenderness of mist create a perceptual field between reality and illusion. Within this space, the environment seems to breathe, and light subtly shifts with each step, revealing the rhythm of time. Through simple structures, the work captures the stillness of the night and transforms light and mist into an experienceable presence.

YuYu Art Studio, based in Yanshuei, Tainan, focuses on local cultural narratives and the connection between humans, land, and nature. The team skillfully employs bamboo and mixed materials to create minimalist sculptural forms that foster multi-layered sensory experiences.

Dormant III – Shuiyue

Creator|Ding Chien Chung

Design concept|

Inspired by the hydrological landscape of Yuejin Harbor, curved structures interweave into a rhythmic gate reminiscent of tidal movement. At dusk, light refracts through layered translucent surfaces, forming flowing illusions like rippling water. Visitors walk through the gaps between light and shadow, experiencing the interlacing of time and space. This installation symbolizes the connection between the harbor and its people, carrying shared memories of history and the present like an eternal tide of light.

Ding Chien Chung frequently uses light as a primary medium, exploring the relationship between space and time. His works embody poetic tension and unfamiliar perspectives on daily systems, inviting viewers to reconsider their perception of life and environment.

Breath

Creator| Bonggi Park

Design concept|

On the bridge, an organic form composed of light flickers in rhythm, as if inhaling and exhaling — simulating the cadence of life’s breath and suggesting the invisible energy of interaction between humans and their environment. As visitors move through the work, they encounter an exceptionally slow tempo, reminding us to relearn our sense of time within an accelerated world. The artist offers a space in which we may pause and contemplate, lingering within a work that echoes the qualities of nature and deeply sensing how we breathe together with the world. Transforming the most fundamental act of life into shared perception, the work weaves natural rhythms and digital beats into a new life field, revealing each viewer as part of the greater system.

Bonggi Park from South Korea draws deeply from nature in his practice, using natural materials to explore nature within nature. Over 30 years, his outdoor works have created tranquil spaces for reflection, offering solace drawn from childhood memories and experiences with the natural world.

Fireworks on the Sea

Creator| Haveshoulder Art Studio

Design concept|

Light slowly rises from beneath the water, like signals from deep-sea organisms, blossoming and fading in the night. Inspired by the structure of radiolarians, the artists imagine diving into an unseen world and bringing its latent light back to reality. These glowing forms symbolize life’s persistence in extreme environments and humanity’s desire to explore the unknown. The flickering lights resemble fragments of memory stored in the cloud, transient yet eternal, reassembling into sparks of time upon the water’s surface.

Haveshoulder Art Studio consists of artists Cheong Man Kin and Huang Tzu Yu, whose practice centers on installation and sculptural works grounded in fine art traditions.

Design concept|

Vertical beams of light traverse air and water, forming mirrored spaces above and below. As viewers move through, their perception is inverted and extended, as though wandering between two dimensions. Continuing the artist’s long-term exploration of light since 2017, this work arranges geometric light forms within the natural landscape, questioning how artificial light reshapes terrain. Reflections create a dual world, akin to the duplication and mapping of data within the cloud — both real and elusive.

Aka_chang is known for his mastery of light installations. From his early experience as a VJ, he began exploring luminous materials and smoke, observing how light arrays influence perception and create structures bridging time, space, sound, and human presence.

Aftereal

Creator| Yasuhiro Chida

Design concept|

This work has been exhibited at major light festivals worldwide, offering viewers an immersive experience of illusionary space. Composed of vibrating devices, fluorescent threads, and ultraviolet strobe lights, hundreds of white threads respond to the strobe and emit blue light. Due to the persistence of vision, the entire surface appears to ripple and undulate. This is an experiment in seeing — when light fractures and reflects, what we perceive is no longer the object itself, but a delay in perception, like an illusion generated within streams of data.

Yasuhiro Chida is an internationally renowned light artist whose immersive installations explore spatial awareness and the transformation of bodily perception, inspired by his experiences in high-altitude climbing and ice climbing.

Celestial Shrine

Creator| Liu Chia Hao & Huang Tsan Lun

Design concept|

A luminous structure floats upon the water, shaped after traditional temple roof ridges yet reshaped by flowing light. The upper structure outlines a space of faith, while the lower cascading streams reflect light into the water, symbolizing the circulation of energy. Viewers seem to enter a ritual of water and light, where the sacred is redefined through perception. This floating temple becomes a spiritual landscape reborn through illumination.

Liu Chia Hao emphasizes spatial construction and sensory interaction, guiding audiences toward renewed engagement with space. Huang Tsan Lun focuses on hybrid themes of biology and machinery, reflecting on how human desire negotiates value and agency.

Yuejin Harbor has been a hub of flowing information since ancient times. With boats passing through and crowds converging, countless stories have unfolded and accumulated along its banks, reflecting the living pulses and cultural memories of Yanshui over time.

The key visual for the 2026 Yuejin Lantern Festival is inspired by "Signals in the Ripples." It transforms the undulating water surface into rhythmic layers of light and shadow. These fluctuations spread like ripples and flow through space like signals, sketching a landscape that continuously evolves within the night of the harbor.

Within this space, visitors are like particles of light—moving, pausing, and drifting with the rhythm of the illumination. The scenery is no longer fixed in a single moment; instead, it is perceived repeatedly between the states of appearing and vanishing. Much like the historical exchanges within the old harbor, these moments quietly leave behind fragments of light that belong to the passage of time.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, we all need a soft cloud to lean on.

Yuejin Harbor, named for its crescent-moon-shaped waters, is also known as 'Moon Harbor.' Looking back at the history of Yanshui and Yuejin, it feels like a lunar legend: Yuejin Harbor was the bright moon that illuminated Yanshui, bringing a dazzling and enchanting prosperity. Today, that era of splendor has transformed into a light, drifting cloud, floating slowly across the sky of time, leaving behind the tranquil reflection of Moon Harbor—a gentle vessel for the passage of years.

Yun-Bao (Cloudie)

A cloud-shaped lantern crafted from translucent synthetic paper, designed for people to assemble themselves and "bring a cloud home."Yun-Bao features an adorable, anthropomorphic face with a dual-sided design representing Day and Night:

  • The Day Side: Features the sun and a vibrant rainbow.

  • The Night Side: Adorned with lightning, the moon, and shimmering starlight.

A Little Surprise: The bottom of the lantern is cleverly designed to project a starry pattern onto the ground as you walk, scattering starlight beneath your feet.
