2020 Yuejin Lantern Festival |Present

Living at present is a present.

It is a present for Yehshui and each of you

2022 marks the 10th anniversary of Yuejin Lantern Festival and we are celebrating a new beginning by presenting everyone with a unique “present.” “Present” is a simple English noun that means both “a gift” and “occurring now.” For us in this post-pandemic era, living in the present is the best present for us and what we have been looking forward to the most over the past two years. We are walking towards tomorrow and what embraces us tightly is the present.

The future of the pandemic development is still hard to predict, but the most valuable present in the present is the moment we have now. In the future, we will meet again after the pandemic to share this “Present” in 2022.

月亮的故事 Stories of the Moon|都市藝術工作室 Urban Art Studio

The winding river of Yenshui has the shape of a crescent moon, so it was named “Yuejing.” The moon is also an important element of the Yuejing Port Lantern Festival. The artist adopted ideas for Lights on Fishing Boats”from eight of the local famous Yuejing sceneries, by combining  light bulbs with the symbol of the moon as  a  joint creation with local residents. Boats cut in different sizes and shapes and the light bulbs represent the historic scenes of “Lights on Fishing Boats” helping local residents to tell Yenshui’s unique stories.

UxU studio

The work was developed using the concept of the moon. It uses concise images to transform the curved bridge into a field rendered by the moon and light, that echos the history and culture of the Yuejin Port. The three circles rest on the curved bridge, with daylight like a mirror, and the reflection of the river, the sun and night light, all working together to form a multi-level scene, creating a new riverside view of Yuejin Port.

Yu-Yu Art Studio

The  land shows the accumulative soil erosion of  many years, and the underground water trace evokes the image  life and presents the history and memories of  the past. In the piece,   “Time Light,” the artist team utilized bamboo, wood, and iron to make the shape of a seed rising from the ground overlapped with a light trace.  The path which is transformed from the sprouting stem invites viewers to enter this space which is illuminated  by the light trace. In the space where the path moves, time travel and traces are  extracted. The shape reflects waves on the ground via the lighting shadows of overlapping and colliding natural materials, symbolizing life  on the land.

Wan Jen Chen

This is a  magical  moment!  Chen Wan-Ren utilized an LED panel and a bamboo raft for this  installation, to allow people to swim in the serene river with images on the lighting screen that symbolize fishing boat lights  in the dark night, floating between noise and serenity in eternity, with a  mix of strange and familiar feelings. The artwork and the viewers get closer and more distant from each other from one moment  to the next,  mirroring the encounter between people and the world. Because the night is beautiful, we wander. This has no starting or ending point since each moment can be a start or an end.

伴月 Accompanied by the Moon |陳奕彰 Chen Yi Chang

During the Yuejin Lantern Festival, the rustic township of Yenshui, enters a magical world  where time and space are frozen. Fantasy seems to become  a diverse night time reality.

Moon is the theme of this artwork that incorporates  multicolored lines of rotating and dancing power. This artwork which is entitled “Accompanied by  the Moon” is comprised of a  moon which is six meters in diameter, to simulate the elegant appearance of the moon’s reflection on the water’s surface, in an  attempt to create   happy and unforgettable memories  of the 2021 Yuejin Lantern Festival. Visitors are also invited to explore the magical Yenshui Township, accompanied  by the moon.

UxU studio

To continue with the creation of the meteor lighting series, the artist utilized water as the theme and incorporated it with lighting elements to simulate a  vertically descending waterfall. Looking at the running lights, viewers’ eyes may be fooled  into mistakening  it with a running waterfall. We need to consider that what you think you see is often not the truth.

Interestingly, when we are watching the running waterfall, do we pay attention to the existence of the river running through and under it? In this world filled with exciting and diverse media, are we often fooled by images so  that  we  ignore the truth in front of us? Which is true;  illustrations, optical images, or our imagination? What do we really believe in our heart?

Lin Chien Chih

If there is underwater power in the winding river of Yenshui Township that protects Yuejing Port, what is it? Among all of the Japanese animations that were produced in the 1990s, “Granzort” impressed the artist the most and it also formed a large part of the artist’s childhood memories.

The artwork appears  on the top of a magic circle on the surface of the water,  and the different faces of Yuejing are  shown.  On one side, the image of Yenshui  Bajiao (The Octagon Building)  is displayed, and on the other side there is the childhood memory of the “Granzort.” The Bajao Building and The Granzort jointly safeguard Yenshui Township and  stir the  imagination  for local cultures.

There are always fish willing to be caught by angler Jiang Taigong.

Jiang Taigong was a famous military advisor and strategist who was instrumental in aiding the establishment of the Zhou Dynasty. He often went fishing at the Wei River, but he fished in a very unusual way. He hung a fish pole, without bait, a few feet above the water. This unique act of fishing is based on Jiang’s theory that the fish would come to him of their own volition when they were ready.

The Fishing Bunny represents artist No2Good’s childhood memories. The spectacles signify strong fascination with all things in life, and the bandaged ear reflects a mischievous and rebellious spirit. The Bunny is holding a fishing pole, staring at the fishing hook with its huge eyes, and carefully listening to movements of its prey. Although difficult, the Bunny is prepared to face the challenges ahead.

Like Jiang Taigong, the Bunny is also fishing with a baitless hook with no intention to catch anything in the water, but rather aim to create a meaningful dialog with the observers.

The Yuejin Harbor, filled with rich history and cultural vitality, is an ideal place to use contemporary art to create a dialog with the historical beauty of the surrounding area. Although the environment has undergone changes over time, the culture and traditional spirit will eventually be passed down. The resolute Fishing Bunny sits steadily on the shore with the playful Welcome Bunny behind him, reminding us to re-explore the world with a pure heart and childlike perspective.

The quiet and tranquil Yuejin Harbor evokes nostalgia. The artist uses this artwork to convey movement in stillness, and hopes to blend contemporary art and historical culture by linking the past and the present through art.

Chen Yu Jung

The concept of creation is based on the river. Through changes of flickering lights and shadows, gravitational waves are transmitted between the interfaces of water and air, symbolizing life in an endless succession of incarnations. Everything will return to emptiness, a natural status. This artwork represents flowing change, and uses the dynamics of light to connect an ambiguous psychological status to life experience and art creation. Lights disappear along with time to explore the fields and memories of daily life.

UxU studio

There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. — Leonard Cohen

Everything on earth turns out to be imperfect in the end, and we cannot only think about the present. Sometimes, because of a crack, the light gets in. Current obstacles can present future opportunities, and we should be brave enough to overcome obstacles in life in order to find a new way out.

The artwork “Crack: Illusions In Art” makes use of common string lights, and through their arrangement, the look of flowing water is simulated. Slowly flowing light forms a picture of flowing water, which runs towards a huge unknown future crack. This poetic image evokes several thoughts and feelings.

As we know, light is not a concrete substance, but lights always gives us images that can be meaningfully connected to authentic objects to inspire our imaginations and feelings. Light flowing down from the crack utilizes illusion as a technique to create water images on the river. When we are viewing light on flowing water, are we aware of the existence of the water under the surface of the river? In this world of new media, are we used to looking at things from the perspective of illusion and ignoring the facts in front of us? What existence do we believe in our mind?

Loudly Lightning, Yao Chung-Han, Tseng-Pin

This artwork was attached to the water bridge at one end of the waterfront river course that connects the cultural features of Yenshui in an  attempt to portray the image of a beehive firecracker festival  through the spatial relationship  between the lighting and the bridge.  The  lighting fixture is  horizontally arranged to represent the spatial relationship of the bridge structure, the underwater surface, and the underwater structure to simulate the lighting effect caused by the explosion and smoke of firecrackers. Electronic music and the sound of beehive firecrackers are  used to create experimental music to simulate the experience of  beehive firecracker with different audio and video experiences for the  viewers.

However, on the site, there are  no  loud sounds; viewers need to connect to another space and time via mobile devices and earphones. Here,  flash lighting and powerful sounds bring magic to each viewer.

Zeng Wei

A lonely white forest has been  installed on the open water of Yuejin Port that utilizes the reflections of light and mirrors to create a  fantastical atmosphere. The “floating” visual illusion is  presented with the mirror surface at the bottom and branch of trees.

The white forest is like an islet floating on Yuejin Port. The reflection on the water’s surface symbolizes  the growth of trees. Branches absorb  rays from the sun and roots receive water and nutrition from the soil. Roots are  as intense as branches, but they grew underground and are  invisible. The magic night reminds viewers of their awareness towards the surrounding environment.

Wang Chun-Yuan

A circle is the most common geometric shape we can find in nature. Ancient Egyptians believed that the circle was a holy shape given to humans by God. All religions around the world use a circle as a symbol of brightness. This artwork uses six circles and three rings arranged in layers. With the 12 apertures reflected in the water, fog is created to represent the mysterious feeling of the arrival of God.

Liu Chia-Hao

When touring around half of Taiwan in a day becomes possible, our views expand. Walking at night, street lights, and vehicles traveling by look like dots connected in a line. It was difficult to slow down when driving on the southbound national highway, but the field lights at night can be traced from Changhua further south along rural paths. The artist tried to record with a smartphone or a camera, so that lights seen in the images of digital lithography became a flock of birds in flight.  The light traces seen in our vision combine with digital lithography, and in that moment the two worlds co-exist.

Cindy Wang

The artist’s goal is to describe the story of a rainbow zoo. Key elements of the creation, the “primary rainbow” and “secondary rainbow,” correspond to natural phenomena. A “Secondary rainbow” is the rainbow we see in the clear sky after rain, in which the light reflects off the inside of the droplets in the air as it separates into different colors. The fantastical atmosphere of a rainbow’s lights and colors is expected in the clear sky after rain, and this artwork utilizes simple and fun lines to convey a love of nature and to call for the public to cherish the Earth’s environment, endangered species and microorganisms. Viewers can directly appreciate the beauty and joy brought by the arts, and be inspired to find a poetic moment in life that can be cherished.

I/R Sound-space Art Studio

Repeating colors are like the cycle of life. Through light refraction and reflection, the best and most authentic self can be seen flowing on the waterfront course of Yuejin Port. The starry sky creating a colorful light reflection on river banks represents our blessings and affection for one another. Future prospects are seen among the flowing lights and reflections that teach us about the beauty of life. Like stars reflected along the length of the river, our inner reflections are quietly revealed, in time with the flow of the water and the natural rhythm of time, accompanied by the spirits of the wind.

Kuo I-Chen

Entering the tenth year of the Yuejin Lantern Festival, the penumbra is visible on the river through the reflection of the Yuejin river as if the memory is more complete because of the vacancy, the light is shining because of the darkness, and the memory is deep because of time. This time, the work "Penumbra" on display at the Yuejin Hong Kong Lantern Festival is combined with the night sketching activity "Light Picking Memory-Night Sketching", using moonlight as the canvas and memory as the brush to retain every memory of time that cannot be replaced.

Yu-Yu Art Studio

Adjacent to the “inland sea,” Yenshui naturally formed its inner port  in the shape of the moon. Thus, it was named Yeujin, Yeugang. Yenshui is like a township surrounded by the moon. The  water in  Yuejin Port  conjures memories of past inhabitants while the water ripples present  encounters from  previous years. Acquaintances and appointments in those years  swirl and advance  with time, creating romantic and magic light reflections on the water.

In the Water Chestnut Field” and “The Glistening Light of the Waves|凡京設計 Vagin Design

It is time to feel the nostalgia of the water chestnut field in Yuejin Port, featuring rafts used to collect red water chestnuts in the glistening light of the waves, and green clusters formed by the floating leaves. This nostalgic scene represents the decomposition, rebuilding and reunification of the past with modernity. Fantastical water chestnut fields overlapping in layers, wind gently blowing the leaves, and waves breathing in the glistening light create a song of nostalgia, sung in the field. The raft is the carrier of past memories that serve as a constant  reminder of the golden era of this land.

I&II  Stories of Yenshui I&II| 都市藝術工作室 Urban Art Studio

Either with the modern grandma who is drying egg noodles or the old gentleman who was the orator of Yongcheng Cinema, through along conversation we got to know their stories. We will invite local residents in their natural space to illustrate their daily lives in Yenshui.

These photos along with the establishment of the Moon Museum present interesting changes. Just as the moon has no gravity, we will show the daily life of people in Yenshui free of gravity. This will help visitors during the Lantern Festival to get a better understanding of Yuejing Port’s produce and lifestyles. Please come to Yenshui and listen to their stories.

“Time” is a scale used to make calendars and measure the length of day and night. Time also shows seasonal changes. But at the same time, “time” is an illusion because we have never observed its trace. Through  encounters with  specific people or the occurrence of specific events, we are able to transform time into memories, making it more meaningful.

19,800 seconds, 5.5 hours, is the exhibition duration of Yuejing Lantern Festival, the designated magic moment.

In this small township embraced by moon light and river, we created a time scale that belongs solely to Yuejing Port. Time scales with lights switching on and off were used to simulate the passing of time and to mingle with memories of  past festivals. When recording each second, we used art to resonate with the viewers’ feelings and  create the decade of this designated field.

Tsai Yi Ting

Floating lights are extending from near to far in time and space. When the wind blows, lights sway and then return to be calm again. Star lights sway like waves and gradually form wavy lines, presenting the dynamic sequential changes of wind power. Each dynamic storyboard is like a continuous act of time and a line on the water’s surface, where the virtual and real worlds meet. Blowing wind and flashing colorful lights create a fitting presentation of the infinite local sceneries of Yuejing Port.

Chen Shu-Chiang

Some feelings are hidden in the heart like traces of some events or the wreckage of feelings and thoughts.  After a period of time, they secretly occupy the corner of our hearts. Sometimes, although they are invisible, they just appear. Chaotically, they hover in our soul, almost visibly. Therefore, I created, transformed, and presented all possible kinds  of materials in formative, aesthetic, and spiritual ways to respond to the existence of this chaotic universe. “Encounter III” utilizes  features of blue ray laser scanning  and incorporates  liner materials to present encounters in different dimensions. Viewers are invited to walk amongst the artwork and get close to it before leaving - just like our various encounters in the world. The spacious effect at the same time allows viewers to gaze at the starry night sky.

Hsu Ting

A “bridge” is a passage connecting two sides. Walking through the bike bridge, the passersby appear and disappear in between the fences and gray structure. Such an ordinary scene here. At sunrise, the shadow of the gray archway shapes up side by side with steps of pedestrians but fades away smoothly at twilight. My project extends and tilts from the contour of the bridge, visualizing sun falling below the horizon where light penetrates the ground and still shines upon the architectural structure to form its shadow. The shadow thus transforms to light at night, illuminating passersby from each side.

Axiom|Kit Webster

In science, boundaries are defined but art elaborates the infinite truth behind.

Axiom was composed and carved with 700,000 LED matrixes. The installation used  three aligned symmetrical arches to present a series of animations. These animations highlighted  and  covered its surface and profile. At the same time, via in-depth effects and illustrations of shadows of artificial numbers, a virtual volume is  shown. Along with these audio and video arrangements, the artwork is deployed for viewers to explore, analyze, and re-invent light and sound, the symmetry of time and space. The distortion of various compositions and dance technologies express natural decomposition. Purposely, an alternative method was introduced to re-structure, and to directly analyze time and space.

Artsy Creation Company

Taking the gift ribbon as the inspiration for the design concept, the artist uses the flexibility of the metal square tube material to create an arc structure.

The upper pine wood is used as the chair's surface and the fluorescent paint and night light are arranged underneath to make it emit a fluorescent effect at night.

The overall shape is like a ribbon on a gift. In a public space, the viewers can have a present that they can also rest upon. We hope that the audience, even under the changes brought on by the epidemic, can still cherish the present moment as the best gift.」

《一一》、《踏踏風》Paddle in the Wind|鄭乘騏、劉佳豪 Cheng Cheng-Chi, Liu Chia-Hao

There were no waves on the river’s surface at Yuejin Port.
When the wind blew, only some leaves remained.
Ripples were seen from the river bank.
Ripples of silver white circles of light were in pairs.
So were the paired benches in the cool night.

《Paddle In The Wind》

Yuejin Port is not close to the sea.
When the wind blows, you have to wear more.
The wind makes the paddles turn.
From the chair, a familiar noise is heard.
That is paddling in the wind.
When there is no one paddling, the wind makes  noise.

The main structure uses iron sheets heated and bent to represent soft ripples. The feet of the chair lean gently. The dark blue surface of the chair represents the coolness of the water’s surface
